Bringing Bikes to Kids in Our Community

posted 12th May 2025
We’re thrilled to share the success of our latest initiative that has brought the gift of bikes to young people in our community, aged 3 to 18!
Thanks to the generous support from Cycling Scotland’s Access to Bikes fund, and the incredible team at De’il’s on Wheels community bike workshop, part of Glasgow Eco Trust, many young people are now the proud owners of their very own bicycles.
The project goes far beyond just handing over a set of wheels. Each young person also received a helmet for safety, and a tote bag packed with cycling essentials, including:
- A sturdy bike lock
- Front and rear lights
- A bike pump
- Repair accessories
- A booklet of Essential Cycling Skills
- A map of local cycling routes
- Plus a few extra accessories to keep riding fun and safe
On Friday, collection day, Neil and Paul from De’il’s on Wheels personally delivered each bike. They ensured that every bicycle was adjusted to the right height for each young person, providing one-on-one attention and expert fitting. They’ve also kindly committed to offering a free follow-up bike service in the coming months for any maintenance or repairs.
This initiative is about more than just transportation — it brings tangible benefits to the young people, their families, and the wider community.
- For young people, owning a bike builds confidence, independence, and a sense of ownership. It allows them to get outside, stay active, and experience the joy of movement.
- For families, especially those who may not have easy access to transport, it eases the burden of getting to school, local amenities, and encourages shared outdoor activity.
- And for the community as a whole, it promotes sustainable travel, healthier lifestyles, and stronger social connections.
Many of the parents who came to collect the bikes shared heartfelt thanks, telling us how much this means for their child and their household.
Behind the scenes and on the day, we couldn’t have done it without the dedication of our wonderful staff. A huge thank you to Wisdom and Melanie, who worked tirelessly in the days leading up to the event, preparing the tote bags and getting everything organised. They were also a huge help on the day, making sure everything ran smoothly.
And the good news doesn't stop here — we’ll be hosting another bike collection day in a couple of weeks, where even more young people will receive bikes and gear to get them started on their cycling journeys.
We’re incredibly grateful to Cycling Scotland, De’il’s on Wheels, and everyone who helped make this project possible. Together, we’re helping our young people roll forward into brighter, more active futures.
Happy cycling to all our new young riders!
